19 March 2025

Belz is not just one of the oldest cities in Ukraine—it is an open-air museum. While its rich Jewish heritage is well-known, the city also preserves many other unique historical landmarks that deserve every traveler's attention.

St. Paraskeva Church – A Wooden Gem of the 18th Century

One of the oldest landmarks in Belz is St. Paraskeva Church, a wooden masterpiece built between 1761 and 1766. This stunning example of Galician folk architecture has miraculously survived to this day. Its elegant wooden construction, towering dome, and the distinct aura of antiquity make it truly unique. Inside, you’ll find an 18th-century iconostasis, remarkable for its intricate craftsmanship and detail. According to legend, this very church once welcomed noble princes in prayer, as they sought peace and prosperity for Belz.

Dominican Sisters' Monastery – An Echo of Ancient Times

For those drawn to mysterious histories, the Dominican Sisters’ Monastery, built between the 17th and 18th centuries, is a must-visit. This place carries a special energy, having been home to nuns who dedicated themselves to education and charity for centuries. The monastery’s stone walls hold countless secrets of the past, and the tranquil atmosphere invites reflection. Once, a girls' school operated here, and today, the site remains one of the most important historical landmarks of Belz.

St. Nicholas Church – A Monument of Sacred Architecture

Another remarkable site in Belz is St. Nicholas Church, built in 1653. As one of the oldest Roman Catholic churches in Lviv region, it stands out with its massive stone walls, Baroque style, and ancient frescoes, making it an architectural masterpiece. The church's interior exudes a timeless spirit, where one can still sense the echoes of past centuries. Though time and wars have left their mark, the church continues to captivate visitors with its grandeur and historical significance.

The Sacred Complex in Zamoček

A hidden treasure of Belz is the sacred complex in the Zamoček area, built between 1911 and 1938. This site symbolizes the city's spiritual life at the beginning of the 20th century. According to legends, an ancient fortress of Belz once stood here, adding to the area’s mystical allure. Today, its ruins and religious monuments serve as a poignant reminder of a glorious past.
