Demand for Green Energy Surges – New Records Ahead
Last year, renewable energy sources generated a record-breaking 32% of the world’s electricity, according to a report by the energy analytics center Ember. Overall electricity demand increased by 4%, driven largely by heatwaves and the rapid growth of data centers.
Additionally, analysts note that trade wars and new tariffs introduced by the United States may further boost demand for renewable energy in the coming year. Given the rising demand, renewable energy production is also expected to grow accordingly.
The European Commission forecasts that EU countries will commission a record amount of renewable energy capacity this year. In 2025, the EU is expected to add 89 gigawatts of new renewable capacity, including 70 GW from solar power and 19 GW from wind.
If permitting delays don’t hinder progress, both wind and solar energy are set to experience record annual deployment. In 2024, the EU installed 65.5 GW of new solar capacity and 12.9 GW of wind capacity.
