Forum “Climate Policy of Ukraine: Ukraine’s Second NDC Amid Current Challenges”
Andriy Tabinskyy, CEO of the Association, took part in the Forum “Climate Policy of Ukraine: Ukraine’s Second NDC Amid Current Challenges.”
During a panel discussion on just transition, he emphasized the critical challenges currently facing coal communities and underlined the importance of creating additional financial mechanisms to support projects envisioned in just transition plans.
"Ukraine can’t achieve its climate goals without the active engagement of local communities. For coal regions, implementing environmental solutions is an inseparable part of a just transition, which must also encompass the social and economic aspects of development strategies. That’s why, when implementing any project, we consider its impact on the local economy and environment as a whole, as well as how it directly affects the quality of life of various social groups within the community. Merging these factors into a single development strategy and bringing it to life is our common task."
"I would like to thank GIZ (GIZ Ukraine) for initiating this important discussion during the forum, giving us an opportunity to share ideas on creating additional financial tools to support coal communities. Special thanks to Halyna Lytvyn for effectively moderating our panel, which holds real potential to turn into concrete practical solutions that will advance the just transition," stated Andriy Tabinskyy.
The analytical findings presented by the EU4ClimateResilience project during the event served as a foundation for discussions on integrating just transition principles into Ukraine’s Second NDC, particularly in the context of post-war recovery.
The event was organized at the initiative of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine with the support of the IKI Interface and EU4ClimateResilience projects. These are implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection, within the framework of the International Climate Initiative (IKI).
