Learning from European coal regions to support Ukraine’s just transition
Olena Yanchyshyn, Project Manager at the Association of Coal Communities of Ukraine, participated in the JTPeers Exchange in Velenje, Slovenia, bringing the perspective of Ukrainian coal communities to an international dialogue on regional transformation.
The three-day exchange brought together representatives of coal regions from Germany and Slovenia to explore practical approaches to just transition. Discussions focused on fostering innovation and entrepreneurship, supporting SMEs, repurposing former coal infrastructure, making effective use of the EU Just Transition Fund, creating new employment opportunities, and equipping the workforce with the skills needed for a changing economy.
The programme also included study visits to transformation sites, including the Šoštanj Thermal Power Plant, the TechHub technology park, the Velenje Coal Mine, and the Coal Mining Museum. These visits provided valuable insights into how former coal regions are implementing long-term transition strategies while creating new economic opportunities.
For Ukraine, where many coal communities are already preparing for economic transformation, learning from European experience is particularly valuable. Exchanging knowledge, building partnerships, and exploring proven approaches help strengthen the capacity of Ukrainian communities to plan and implement a sustainable and resilient transition.
The Association of Coal Communities of Ukraine remains committed to bringing international expertise closer to Ukrainian communities and fostering cooperation that supports their long-term development.
