Learning from EU’s Just Transition Experience: JTPeers Exchange Study Visit
Poland recently hosted the international JTPeers Exchange study visit, organised under the European Commission’s Just Transition Platform. The programme brought together representatives from regions across Poland and the Czech Republic to exchange practical experience, discuss current approaches to just transition, and explore successful examples of the transformation of former coal regions.
Representing the Association of Coal Communities of Ukraine, Project Manager Roksolana Shcherbyna took part in the study visit.
The programme combined thematic discussions, expert presentations, and site visits showcasing tangible examples of successful transformation. Participants visited innovation and science & technology centres, explored solutions in energy efficiency, renewable energy, entrepreneurship, and innovation, and observed the revitalisation of former industrial and coal sites. Particular attention was given to creating new economic opportunities for local communities, developing skills for the green economy, and engaging local stakeholders in the transformation process.
One of the greatest strengths of study visits like this is the opportunity to see the results of transformation not only through presentations, but first-hand in the communities themselves. They also provide a valuable chance to meet the people who have led these changes and gain a deeper understanding of the solutions, approaches, and tools that have contributed to their success.
We sincerely thank the organisers and our international partners for the opportunity to participate in this valuable professional exchange. Learning from European experience and successful just transition practices is essential for understanding how similar transformation processes can be effectively implemented in Ukraine.
