Several Key Highlights from the 2023 Statistical Review of World Energy
Several Key Highlights from the 2023 Statistical Review of World Energy:
Last year, energy consumption reached a record high, increasing by 2% compared to the previous year. Over half of the demand comes from the Global South, where it is growing twice as fast as in the rest of the world.
Emissions from the energy sector reached a historic high, exceeding 40 gigatons of CO2 for the first time.
Coal, oil, and gas remain the primary sources of energy in the world, accounting for over 81% of the energy mix.
India consumes more coal than all the countries in Europe and North America combined.
Coal usage in Europe and North America is declining. In Europe, fossil fuels account for less than 70% of the energy mix for the first time since the Industrial Revolution. In the USA, fossil fuel consumption has dropped to 80% of total primary energy consumption.
Global renewable energy production is increasing. Excluding hydropower, it increased by 13% to a record level of 4748 TWh. This upward trend is seen not only in Europe and the USA. For example, China added 55% of the total renewable energy generation, more than the rest of the world combined.
The data is taken from the 73rd annual edition of the Statistical Review of World Energy, presented by the Energy Institute, KPMG, and Kearney.
